Abstract

St. Thomas Aquinas writes about eternal, natural and positive law in many of his works, but the most systematic and mature development of this issue can be found in his Summa Theologiae. According to Aquinas, the law is “the ordinance of reason for the common good, given and publicly proclaimed by the person who has the care of the community.” It is the work of reason; it orders human action, which is focused on its goal. The law is also characterized by versatility, because its goal is the common good.
