The article examines the views of selected Early Christian (Tertullian, Basil of Caesarea, Augustine of Hippo) and scholastic (Thomas Aquinas, Antoninus of Florence, Francis of Vittoria) thinkers, regarding the issue of withdrawing medical treatment. In the works of the ancient Christian writers these issues were never emphasized; however, they do advert to other issues relating to the continuation or withdrawal of medical treatment. In our times, due to the rapid development of medical science, this issue has become prominent. According to the author, early Christian and scholastic thinkers’ opinions can help us understand, to a certain extent, the historical context and cultural determinations of particular contemporary ethical solutions.
