TY - JOUR AB - This article seeks to show one of the ways in which poststructuralists’ ideas may become a tool for deep revision of the understanding of religion. Analyzing, from this perspective, the views of Don Cupitt (an influential representative of “anti-realist” criticism of theistic discourse), leads one to attend especially to the close relationship between Cupitt’s line of argument and Derrida’s deconstruction. Establishing this relationship justifies the conclusion that the main weakness of Cupitt’s conceptions is one that is shared with the philosophy of Derrida. Hence, criticism of the latter can be utilized in the service of an apologia for a traditional "realist" understanding of religious discourse, in the face of postmodern critique.
